Award-winning illustrator, Kathleen Wong Bishop delights students with her puppets and bugs. As they laugh, children learn about art, book publishing, and fables with morals. Bishop and author Leslie Hayashi followed their dream in first grade to create books for children
Bishop's entertaining talk includes:
- How books are created, including fables that are excellent for character education, see Teacher Resources.
- Editing illustrations.
- Research is fun. Great science information: marine life, deep ocean and endangered animals.
- Learn new things with practice, patience and concentration.
- Stories come alive with puppets.
- View original watercolor paintings.
- Color theory: colors have emotions, complementary colors.

Talk lasts 45-60 minutes, with 15 minutes between sessions. 1/2 hour needed for set up. Best learning environment: 80 students in library with tables/chairs moved aside, students sitting on the floor.
Overhead projector to show 30-40 images of the publishing and illustration process, including watercolor techniques such as salt and plastic.

Books are made available for sale by sending a flyer home with the students. Honorarium to be paid on the day of the presentation.
Learning opportunities: watercolor textures painting demonstration, drawing lesson, and parent/child art workshop, using supplies provided by the school. Bishop can bring materials for painting demonstration for an additional $10. |
